The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration advises that parents use car seats or booster seats for children from birth to approximately 11 years of age. However, not installing a seat properly puts the child in danger in the event that an accident occurs.

After acquiring a child’s safety seat, read the instructions, which often explain and provide illustrations related to proper installation. The seat needs to be installed on the rear seat of the vehicle. Locate the anchors or tethers that come in the vehicle.

If the vehicle does not contain the devices, use one of the seat belts to secure the safety seat. Make sure the seat is secured tightly. It should not move from side to side or forward more than one inch. For infant seats, the angle must be adjusted to prevent the baby’s head and neck from moving forward.
